Update on the Federal Takeover of MPD

Dear Ward 2 Democrats:

As you know from news reports, District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit the morning of Friday, August 15, to stop the federal government takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department. Lawyers for the District of Columbia and the federal government went before a federal judge later that afternoon. As a result of the District's efforts, command and control of the Metropolitan Police Department remains with Chief Pamela Smith (watch NBC Washington's overview below).

What's Next, What Can I Do?

The legal process is not over. I encourage you to educate yourselves (and your friends and neighbors across the country) about Home Rule in the District of Columbia. Too many Americans still have no idea of the rights denied us as District residents. It is up to us to educate and inform everyone we can.

Stay informed by utilizing multiple trusted news sources and sign up for email correspondence from the Mayor's Officeyour DC Council members and the Office of the Attorney General.

More National Guard on the Way

All of this is taking place while the federal government continues to target homeless encampments across the city and the undocumented. Yesterday it was announced that some 700 additional National Guard members are on their way to the District from West Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio

With several checkpoints already showing up across Ward 2, it is important to know your rights at a checkpoint. Additional resources are listed below:

Lastly, exercise your first amendment rights, it is vital at this moment, but do so in a safe and lawful manner. We can't play into the false narrative that is being perpetuated of the District and its residents.

The eyes of the nation and the world are on the District of Columbia at this moment. Be the example. Stand up for Democracy and the rule of law.
