Evacuation Information - Georgetown

In the event of an evacuation of the District of Columbia, residents of the Georgetown and Burleigh/Hillendale neighborhoods should use the following routes:

  • MacArthur Boulevard
  • Canal Road
  • Wisconsin Avenue
  • Connecticut Avenue west of Rock Creek Park
  • Key Bridge to Virginia

Note that no vehicles will be permitted to cross Pennsylvania Avenue during an emergency evacuation, and residents should evacuate to the North and West and to the South across Key Bridge (West of 26th and M Streets).

Other issues to be aware of within the neighborhoods of Georgetown and Burleith/Hillendale have been identified as:

  • South of M Street traffic restrictions

  • Traffic in Hillandale area – there is one exit out to 39th Street

  • Tree Control – issue in Georgetown only
  • Street Flooding – at Pennsylvania Ave., between 27th and 28th Streets, at foot of PA Avenue Bridge, and Canal Road.
  • Presence of high-profile government officials, such as Vice President and Secretary of the Army, and numerous embassies make this area vulnerable as a target.
  • Located on flight path to Reagan National Airport
  • Hazardous business locations:
    • Pepco substation at 3300 Water Street

    • Verizon switch at 1000 Wisconsin Avenue

    • Three water mains feeding the city at corner of M Street and Canal Rd.

    • Whitehurst Bridge and Freeway
